Watch options. Storyline Edit. Action Crime Drama Thriller. Not Rated. Did you know Edit. Goofs Its not easy to believe that Prakash Raj's character would be traveling without his own weapon in the beginning of the film. Also he would have been the first target to be shot rather than the car driver.

The scene in Pre-Interval where Senapthi revelas the mystery to his wife followed by the best scene of the film where his wife looks at her sons through window I loved this scene with Bhoomi Bhoomi as background score That Interval bang left me in Awe and raised expectations on second half..
But second half left me in confusion when the action started. It started so soon that I wasn't ready for it. Mani Ratnam had let the drama to take back seat so that pne of the most violent movie in recent times could start.
With all the grey characters started attacking each other, I was confused to whom perspective I should watch this Even with epic making, I wasn't mended with that action but then Praaptham song started in background which started giving me clarity.. Such an unique mark from Mani Ratnam and Ar Rahman and the uniquely made Climax cleared the doubts ofcourse it left few unanswered. So, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam may not be the best from Mani Ratnam but its riveting crime drama with terrific performances from all the cast and pitch perfect technical values..
My rating 7. Wow, Music Background and everything faisalfaves 21 October What an brilliant work, Powerful characters, good story and pacy screenplay breaks all the expectation.
Brilliant performances from all the actors especially Vijay Sethupathi. And a well maintained suspense with a good ending. An interesting movie based on a ganster family. We have already seen a lot of these kind of movies from my recollection, Godfather, RGVs Sarkar, etc. But the movie scores heavily in its stylish narration and mind-blowing BGMs.
The movie is thrilling from beginning to end. Overall, a good entertainer, but strictly not everyones cup of tea. Multi-starrer movies are a rarity in Tamil cinema. When you top this enviable star cast with top notch technical team that Mani Ratnam marshals including A R Rahman, Santosh Sivan and Sreekar Prasad, the expectations are literally sky high to match the title.
A slick trailer only whetted our appetite even more. While the plot itself, about the internecine battles in a gangland family between three brothers to succeed their father along with a cop with an ambiguous moral compass, while not new, does offer ample scope for an engaging crime drama.
However, despite having a heavy duty cast, Mani fails to flesh out the characters meaningfully and consequently, we don't feel any connection to the characters. While a hurried narrative could give a sense of urgency, here, it cuts down the impact of even the critical situations. As a result, it appears to be an exercise of style over substance. The main cast have tried to do their best within the minimal material that they seem to be working with and sure enough, they have their own moments when they shine.
But, these are not sufficient in themselves and definitely, are not coming together in a coherent manner. I had very low expectation for this movie but it turned out to be awesome. You cannot decide between the character you hate and love Mixed emotions delivered. On point.
Excellent cast, Excellent direction and excellent bgm. Overall a very good movie. Weak story patched with some camera works, worst screenplay, songs are composed at unnecessarily its really been irritating. Character plantation totally trash,This movie is example for how not to make a gangster movie like this. Normal audience will definitely like this movie but those who are watching movie based on story, it will be a great disappointment.
JaikrishnaVS 30 September After a disastrous dud with the previous outing, Mani Ratnam is well and truly back to his Nayakan days with Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. From the day the trailer of this multi-starrer hit YouTube, there had been a lot of intrigue surrounding it. Silambarasan meant that there would be lot of questions surrounding how well they were utilized and who scored the brownie points. Add to all this, when you have the magic of the Santosh Sivan canvas and A.
Rahman music pepping up every single scene with some powerful BGM you have an instant classic. The story premise is thus: When there is an attempted murder at an aging don Senapathy Prakash Raj and his wife, his three sons Vardan Arvind Swamy , Thyagu Arun Vijay and Ethi Silambarasan joins forces to find out the mastermind behind it. Armed with the ambition to be the sole heir to their father's throne, a power struggle ensues between the three brothers.
Rasool Vijay Sethupathy , a Police Inspector with charming, yet debatable character is roped in by his childhood buddy Vardan to try and seize the upper hand over his brothers as well as other fellow dons.
The ever charming Jyothika plays Chitra, the eldest daughter-in-law of the family, while Jayasudha plays the heart-broken mother who tries to talk sense into whole family. What ensues is a hard hitting, thriller which has a family as the premise but is more of a gangster movie than a family drama.
It's an ode to how great Mani Ratnam is, the way he handled the huge star-cast, giving them all, powerful and meaningful characters. Almost every single charter has shades of grey and we the audience are torn in our understanding of good and evil. Silambarasan all, respectively, gave one of their best performances in my recent memory and yet it was Vijay Sethupathi who was the cherry on top of the cake.
If one were to say that his performance outdid all the other stunning performances that were delivered throughout the movie, it wouldn't be too much off the mark. It just goes to show how much Vijay Sethupathy has grown in stature in the industry as an actor. There are so many brilliant, poignant, meaningful scenes throughout the movie that left me dissecting the movie hours after done watching it.
JjNot a remake of New World Korean movie. Honestly New world is my favorite film above all Gangster movie. I wont even say "one of the". It is in Top. If that movie remade in any language it will be a blockbuster hit. Every scene in this movie is predictable. Hence it wont make any thrilling scenes. I loved mani ratnams direction and frames. Everyone acted very well, but the screenplay was the drawback. Dialogues were too dramatic that the scenes tends to be realistic, hence both wont join together well.
Over usage of BGM in every dialogue kept the dialogues turned foggy. Story is average as many things in the story came as said in dialogues. Eventhough the story revolves around gangsters doing illegal business but the movie didnt shown any of it. Just like in the cliche in the climax vijay sethupathi reveals that he is in Undercover. A family drama but yet a mainstream gangster epic,Mani Ratnam after a long time has gone back to one of the genres he is known for - the "godfather" gangster epic - family drama that has shades of both It has been a long time since Mani sir released a thriller film since Raavanan.
Thrillers are rare In mani sir's film career but this time Man sir nails it. Enjoyed it just as good as his Film Raavanan, The whole film is told without much gore in a stylishly constructed tapestry of acting performance, cinematography and scene by scene articulation not found in any South Indian film to date. It has a mainstream script with a thriller noir feel. In the south , the way the gang rivalry films are handled seems too ordinary but considering the man behind this film, expect to see some innovation.
One would expect the directors previous masterpieces along the gangster epic genre like Nayakan or Thalapathy reminiscence here but we wont see any references or similarity to any of these films. What we will see here is an updated but still mainstream version of the typical gangster stories which we often had a healthy staple of in south cinema. We also do not see much of the classic Mani style stand out- lighting from his previous films.
Instead the sheer acting performance, camerawork , set design and the magic chemistry between the actors drive the entire film. Engrossing and well worth watching. A stylish gangster movie with arr big plus music Iamnrdurjoy 4 January After facing a dangerous accident the mafia of Tamil Nadu survived but he heard something what made him shattered. After his death all his three sons were one after another to claim their father's position.
Somehow someone or everyone become one of another's traitor. What was the reason behind the mafia's shattering? What happened to all of them? TheV2 25 November This is by far Mani Ratnam's best movie of the last years and pretty much the only latest movie up to his standards. The concept is simple and a worldwide known message, but it was crafted with an eye for depth - at least at the beginning. It's about the tale of three brothers, sons of Senapathy, searching the culprit of a murder and also seeking for more power, while a family-friend cop is also involved.
This movie has probably the most stardom-filled cast from Prakash Raj to VJS, which lead to big expecations for the characters. Now firstly the first half was an amazing execution. The character development was similiar to Ayutha Ezhuthu. It was simple to understand their differences, their desire and you could relate to everyone emotionally. The performance of everyone was great. One of the biggest highlight in the entire movie was A. Rahman's score. This was by far his best work in the last few years.
Now since the beginning of the second half it turned to a less emotional, action-packed story with less story and character development. Characters were dragged into sides and it went to drastic, so the movie should've been longer.
It's not like the movie wasn't watchable, but it was difficult to relate to any of the characters' decisions. In the end it's still a good and even re-watchable movie, especially because of an amazing end, which could've been predictable, but I personally don't really know, cuz I saw it coming due to spoilers. Unfortunately some mindless Indian media channels think they need to spoiler in video titles and thumbnails.
This is a movie and not breaking news goddamned! Most of them have moments which they own but it doesn't make them full characters. This would have worked better as a longer film with them being etched better.
